Dea Matrona: Girl Power from Ireland

Two girls – or how they told the story, two “enemies” – entered the same school competition with only one spot left. It sounds like the beginning of a plot of a blockbuster, but it’s actually how Dea Matrona found each other and began making music together – busking on the streets of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Formed in 2018, the band is led by Orlaith Forsythe and Mollie McGinn. Known for their classic rock sound inspired by legends like Fleetwood Mac and Led Zeppelin, the duo have gained a substantial following by posting cover songs online. Their 2020 single ‘Make You My Star’ even reached number 1 on the UK and Ireland iTunes Rock Charts.

On November 17th, Dea Matrona were supported by up-and-coming band Garage Flower at The Garage in North London. Garage Flower set the tone for the night, getting the crowd moving before the main act took the stage. The name Dea Matrona, which translates to “Divine Mother Goddess” in Celtic mythology, feels like a nod to their Irish heritage. During the show, the duo spoke about “standing up for who you are and where you’re from” before asking the crowd if there were any Irish in attendance. Their song ‘Wilderness’ even features a count in the Irish language. It’s clear that the duo is inspired by and proud of their Irish roots. Their debut album ‘For Your Sins’ was released in March 2024 and includes tracks such as ‘Wilderness’, ‘Red Button’, or ‘Stuck on You’, which were all performed in London on November 17th. Their album blends genres like classic rock, indie pop and country, with Fleetwood Mac’s influence especially apparent.

Dea Matrona are an independent band that self-produce their music, giving them full creative control over their sound. The girls‘ performance was engaging and fun, with strong audience interactions and a clear chemistry between the duo on stage. Their harmonized vocals and guitar solos highlight their musical talents, while songs like the soft ballad ‘Glory, Glory (I Am Free)’ reveal a more vulnerable side. In the song, their harmonies and powerful voices are a clear focus as they sing; “…I saw an angel break its wings. Turn to me and start to sing. Glory, Glory now I’m free. I heard the angel call to me and my heart it starts to bleed. Glory, Glory we are free…”. The girls have clearly build a strong connection with their audience through their online presence as well as the heartfelt and humerous stories they tell during their live performances.

“Has anyone ever met a witch? … Are you a witch? … This song is about falling for a witch … Maybe it’s you!” they joked during a crowd interaction before performing ‘Magic Spell’, their latest release from October 2025. Both girls switched seamlessly between lead and backing vocals, as well as guitar and bass, throughout the show, continually showcasing their musical skills. Despite them jokingly telling the story of how they started out as “enemies”, their on-stage chemistry now is undeniable. Their powerful harmonies, authentic connection, musical talent, and electrifying performance have proven that they’re ones to watch – destined for even bigger stages. Clearly, their devoted fans will follow them wherever they go.
