Flipturn: American Indie Rock in London

On a chilly November night in London, Flipturn lit up the O2 Forum Kentish Town with vibrant energy, demonstrating why they’re one of indie rock’s most exciting “new” voices. The American indie rock band from Florida was formed in 2015 and released their second album, ‘Burnout Days’, in 2025. The five-piece band consists of Dillon Basse (lead vocals), Tristan Duncan (lead guitar), Madeline Jarman (bass), Mitch Fountain (keys) and Devon VonBalson (drums). Basse, Duncan and Jarman met in high school and started out by playing college house shows in Florida, gaining momentum with their 2018 released EP ‘Citrona’, which featured their viral hit ‘August’.
Flipturn’s music blends indie rock and new wave, a mix that’s helped them build a dedicated fanbase. Supporting them in London was Colony House, another American indie rock band from Tennessee. The four-piece band – Caleb Chapman (lead vocals/guitars), Will Chapman (drums), Scott Mills (guitars/bass) and Parke Cottrell (bass/keyboards) – brought infectious energy with a subtle hint of country, perhaps a nod to their roots in Tennessee. Chapman addressed the crowd, expressing gratitude to Flipturn for having them on this tour with them by saying; “We are kind of like the friend that came with a friend, but you’ve been very kind to us… It’s every band’s dream to make it across the pond”. Their joyful and energetic set even had the audience singing along to ‘You Know It’ from their 2017 album ‘Only The Lonely’, their biggest hit, which earned them plenty of applause this night.
Flipturn started their set with ‘Juno’, the synth-driven opening title of their latest album, which was released in January of this year. The song, as well as the whole album, explores themes of burnout, love and loss. Their music reflects on their experiences with exhaustion from extensive touring, perfectly matching the album’s title ‘Burnout Days’. Flipturn’s live performance was instrumentally heavy and enhanced by a captivating light show, while they mixed indie rock with pop and alternative elements. When drummer VonBalson split his kick drum mid-show, Basse kept the crowd entertained and engaged with humorous remarks while the technical issue was fixed. The setlist balanced new material, songs off of their debut album, as well as songs from their 2018 released EP, such as ‘Six Below’, ‘Nickel’ or their biggest hit ‘August’.
Reflecting on their headline tour coming to an end and the band’s growth in the last years, Basse addressed the crowd during the show by saying; “Thank you so much for buying tickets. We definitely have to come back to London very soon. You guys are fucking incredible. Thank you so much for listening to the music, for telling others about the music… We played much smaller venues last year. It’s really cool to see this far away from home”. Last year, they performed for just about 250-300 people at the Moth Club and The Lower Third. This year, they played for over 2,000 people at the O2 Forum Kentish Town – an incredible growth in such a short amount of time, especially with this only being their second time in London.
A shower of confetti during ‘Space Cowboy’ in the North London venue created a magical moment right before the encore. For the encore, Flipturn covered Tears For Fears‘ ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’, getting the whole crowd dancing and singing along, before closing the show with ‘Nickel’. Basse thanked Colony House for joining them, sharing that “they have looked up to them for a long time”. Flipturn’s set was dynamic and energetic but also engaging – the band’s drummer, VonBalson, even played the drums within the crowd, making the show unforgettable, especially for those in the front row. The setlist perfectly balanced fun sing-alongs with emotional moments and lots of audience interactions, creating an atmosphere that was intimate but joyful, and even had those on the balcony on their feet dancing. Their set definitely proved that Flipturn is a band on the rise. Their rapid growth within the last years begs one question: Which venue will Flipturn headline next time they return to the UK capital?
