Hot Milk and Mouth Culture brought the thunder to Norwich the other night with a sold-out show at The Waterfront! Performing a short UK warm up tour before they set off on a month-long US tour with Magnolia Park and South Arcade, Hot Milk certainly gave all their energy and left everything they had to give on stage, allowing for an unforgettable evening for all their fans in attendance.
Starting off with a strong set from Mouth Culture, they had a very upbeat set and strong stage presence to get the crowd warmed up. I wasn’t familiar with their music before the show, but I particularly enjoyed ‘Sharkbait’, and they’ve gained a new fan in me, so I definitely need to check out the rest of their discography more thoroughly.
Then it was time for Hot Milk to take to the stage amongst the loud cheers from the crowd. Starting off strong with their first single ‘90 Seconds To Midnight’ from their upcoming album ‘Corporation P.O.P.’, out on June 27th. This track features heavy rock guitar riffs and subtle screams along with heavy cowbell. The new singles keep their signature sound whilst also taking it in a new slightly heavier direction, all while allowing their frustration at the current state of the world to shine through. Their discography up until this point has been heavily focused on mental health and feelings so this is refreshing new material that’s more focused on the current political climate whilst still being highly relatable for fans.
Their hour long set continued with all the fan favourites from their last album and past EPs, before performing their latest single ‘Swallow This’ and unreleased song ‘Insubordinate England’. I am now super excited for the upcoming album; it is very politically charged and will hopefully serve as a crutch and source of comfort for fans to get through these times where it feels like the world is falling apart. Han and Jim’s complimentary screams combined with the powerful lyrics are comforting and I know that this is going to be a strong album just from hearing these 3 singles.
Han then climbed into the crowd and onto someone’s shoulders for ‘Party On My Deathbed’ while the crowd moshed around her, before climbing back on stage for an encore of ‘Glass Spiders’.
All in all, it was a very emotional high energy gig and they once again proved why they are one of the best up and coming bands. Their live shows and stage presence are just incomparable to any other band and it’s even more special in packed out smaller venues.
